Director of the Language Learning Center

Tulane University seeks a dynamic and collaborative language educator to lead our language learning center. Reporting directly to the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, the Director of the Language Learning Center will be responsible for a range of interrelated tasks and responsibilities relating to language pedagogy, supervising staff, working with language programs to coordinate and implement language placement for Tulane's undergraduate population, and developing strategies for pedagogy and evaluation of language teaching for the School of Liberal Arts.

The candidate should have a vision for 21st-century language teaching that is conversant with new technologies, responsive to pressures on language enrollment, and creative in meeting the demands of a new generation of students. Working closely with the Dean's senior leadership team, the candidate will be charged with developing language programs for new markets, whether during summer, online or interactive spaces. The successful candidate should bring fresh ideas and bold creativity to this newly enhanced role.

Duties include:

  • Continual development, refinement, and implementation of an innovative strategy for second/world language acquisition
  • Coordination of assessment and assignment of individual language placements
  • Assisting language departments with proficiency testing
  • Development and implementation of sustainable revenue generating language programming
  • Organization of workshops for the continual professional development of language faculty
  • Providing consultation services to language departments regarding instructional, pedagogical, technological, testing and assessment related questions
  • Administrative duties such as supervision of staff, budget management, overseeing technical support

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Practical and theoretical knowledge regarding world language pedagogy, second language acquisition, and instructional technology
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, and Web design applications
  • Familiarity with current computerized data collection systems for laboratory settings
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills

Required Education and/or Experience

  • Masters degree in a language, language pedagogy, applied linguistics, or a related discipline
  • Experience in language center management
  • Experience with the implementation of technologies in world language curriculum
  • Experience with language testing, placement, and assessment
  • Experience with designing and implementing language program and language course curricula
  • Experience with developing and implementing a strategic vision for second language acquisition
  • Experience developing and administering innovative revenue-generating language programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in language pedagogy, applied linguistics, or a related discipline
