With over 150 majors, our faculty members offer a range of theoretical, historical, and praxis-oriented courses. We contribute to the Film Studies major and minor, as well as to the Digital Media Practices coordinate major. Our faculty and department also maintain partnerships with African & African Diaspora Studies, Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies. As part of our commitment to New Orleans and the University’s undergraduate public service graduation requirement, we offer several service learning courses in video production, media literacy, and cultural production for local nonprofit agencies, educational institutions and businesses.
The mission of the Department of Communication is to produce and encourage knowledge and creative expression from the theoretical, critical and practical study of communication. We are committed to developing rigorous, innovative and influential research and to building a strong record of service to the disciplines and to communities in New Orleans and elsewhere. We also strive to provide our students with a rich educational experience that prepares and empowers them to become competent scholars, professionals and citizens. The department achieves this mission by promoting an interdisciplinary and critical approach that examines communication within broader social, economic and political contexts.
