Funding for PhD Student Conference Travel

The department encourages PhD students to travel to conferences to present papers as this is important to professional growth as economists. The costs of these trips should be covered, first, by the research account provided when students started in the PhD program and/or funds applied for through GSSA and other university sources. If these aforementioned funds are still insufficient, then students may apply to the department chair for the lesser of: (a) the uncovered cost of travel; and (b) $500 in additional funding. Approval of these funding requests will be handled on a case by case basis, but requires evidence from the Director of Graduate Studies that the student is in good standing within the program, that a paper has been approved for presentation on a conference panel, and that other university funding options have been exhausted.
