Joel C. Webb

Joel C. Webb is a PhD candidate and author of “Drawing a Glorious Past, Picturing an Uncertain Future” published by European History Quarterly. He holds degrees in European history from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the University of New Orleans. He is currently writing a dissertation on the cultural history of the early Spanish railways with the working title, “‘Iron Monsters’ in the Spanish Garden: The Railroad in the Nineteenth-Century Spanish Imagination.” It explores the short-lived period of railway euphoria that overtook Spain in the mid-nineteenth century, and argues that Spanish insecurities regarding their perceived economic and cultural backwardness accentuated the significance of the railways in the imaginations of those both enthralled and enraged by the transformations they were witnessing.
