Professor Hock is a specialist in the late Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey, focusing on the history of gender and sexuality during wartime. His current research investigates how the setting of war in the Ottoman Empire between 1911 and 1922 was crucial to the trajectory of state policies that regulated sexual behavior. His research has appeared in the International Journal of Middle East Studies and the Journal of the History of Sexuality.
Professor Hock offers surveys in the modern Middle East and the history of Islam as well as courses on the history of sexuality and gender and the First World War in the Middle East.
