Biography
Andrew Miller received his bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Missouri State University and his master’s degree in social science from the University of Chicago. In 2021, he entered the Ph.D. program at Tulane, where he holds a John T. Monroe Fellowship and is advised by Dr. Randy J. Sparks. His research focuses on the Gulf South in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when the United States gained control of a region long dominated by Indigenous and European powers, transforming it into the slave society that later generations would call the Old South. His dissertation examines the life and thought of an architect of that transformation, the Scottish-born scientist and cotton planter William Dunbar (1749-1810), as well as the experiences of the enslaved men and women on Dunbar’s Mississippi plantations.
