Internships

The English Department encourages students to seek out internships as part of their major program. Internships can give students practical experience in applying the knowledge and skills of their coursework in schools, non-profit organizations, government agencies and other professional contexts. This gives students the opportunities to explore career interests and to use their skills for the betterment of their communities. With the permission of the Director of Undergraduate Studies, majors are permitted to count up to three credit hours of internships (the equivalent of one course) towards the major.

Recently, English majors have completed internships at Charter Middle School, American Routes Radio Program, The Gambit, the New Orleans Literary Festival, The New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center, U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), The Douglass Community Coalition, and other on and off-campus organizations in New Orleans. Students also compete for summer internships around the country.

Academic credit for an internship requires satisfactory completion of the requirements outlined in the Internship Checklist. Students cannot receive academic credit for paid internships.

The English Department works closely with the Office of Service Learning Internship Coordinators to place and supervise students in local internships. For internships outside the New Orleans region, students should contact the Office of Career Services. In order to register an internship for academic credit, students should consult with the Internship Coordinators in the Office of Service Learning.
