Biography

Carlos Juan Lozano received a B.A. in Hispanic Philology (2007), an M.A. in Hispanic Studies (2009) and a PhD in Hispanic Applied Linguistics (2015) from the Universidad de Valencia (Spain). Before joining the Tulane faculty, he taught at the Universidad de Valencia, Hampden Sydney College, and the University of Virginia in Valencia (Spain). 

Dr. Lozano is an expert in the design and implementation of innovative, learner-centered language programs. His pedagogical and scholarly interests encompass Spanish for Specific Purposes—particularly Medical Spanish, Business Spanish and Legal Spanish—curriculum development, and community-engaged learning. With advanced expertise in Second Language Acquisition, language pedagogy, and assessment, Dr. Lozano integrates research-driven methodologies into instructional design and professional language training. He is an Authorized Physician Oral Language Observation Matrix (POLOM) Educator, a teaching credential awarded by the National Association of Medical Spanish that enhances specialized Medical Spanish instruction and strengthens institutional capacity to prepare students for linguistically and culturally competent practice in healthcare and related professional domains. In addition, Dr. Lozano has extensive experience teaching and coordinating study abroad programs in Spain, further enriching his pedagogical approach through immersive, intercultural language learning contexts. He has also served as a certified tester for the DELE Diplomas, the official certification of Spanish language competence and proficiency granted by the Instituto Cervantes and Spain’s Ministry of Education.
