Biography
Jami’L Carter is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Digital Media Practices Department. She is a writer, director, producer, and poet. She holds a BA in English from Southeastern Louisiana University and an MFA in Film Production from the University of New Orleans. Jami’L’s passion for storytelling propelled her toward a career of filmmaking to produce impactful films and write compelling stories. Her art implores thought and brings awareness to relational conflicts, personal trauma and growth, and social and personal perspective. Such examples of her work are festival selected films: “Tender Curiosity” and “To Get By”. Her films have been screened in festivals in Indiana, D.C., Georgia, and New Orleans. Her poems about the lingering impacts of generational trauma, “Void: Generational Wounds”, and the marginalization of self and others, “Alligatoridae”, appear in Passengers Journal and Decolonial Passage. "Below The Veil", her most recent film, is currently in the film festival circuit and she is producing two short films. Jami'L is a part of the New Orleans Film Society 2024 Emerging Voices Director's Lab and was selected for Full Armor Conservatory's 2024 Screenwriting Intensive. She is currently working on her next short film, Tell Me Why. As an educator, she aims to inspire the next generation, assist them in identifying their voice and individuality, and inform them that their future is boundless.
