Ten courses and a minimum of 30 credits are required for the major.
- AFRS 2000 Introduction to Africana Studies
At least one section of this course is offered every semester While students are strongly encouraged to take this course during their first or second year of study, all undergraduates—including juniors and seniors—are welcome in the class. - Nine elective courses that that collectively meet the following geographic and level distribution requirements.
- 2 courses (6 credits) on African studies topics
- 2 courses (6 credits) on African diaspora studies topics
- 2 courses (6 credits) at the 4000-level or above
- 1 course (3 credits) with an AFRS prefix
Allowances & Limitations
- Up to two semesters of Haitian Creole, Swahili, Yoruba, Zulu, or Arabic (or other languages approved in advance and at the unit head’s discretion) can count toward the relevant geographic distribution requirement of the major.
- A maximum of 4 dance credits can count toward the major. Students may take a 2-credit dance course to fulfill one of their geographic distribution requirements in African Studies and in African Diaspora Studies. However, they will still need 30 total credits and at least 10 classes to complete the major.
- With advance approval and at the unit head’s discretion, courses below the 4000-level courses may be allowed count toward the upper-level course requirement; however, altogether, a maximum of 3 courses (9 credits) below the 3000-level can count for elective credit.
