Biography
Benewaa Tawiah is an artist from Ghana and an inaugural member of the Crossroads Cohort pursing an MFA in photography with a concentration in Africana studies. Currently she is investigating the relationship between adulthood, urban space, and play, and how these ideas intersect with questions of memory and nostalgia. She aims for her work to be an invitation to play, whatever shape/form that takes for individuals: daydreaming, coloring, solving crossword puzzles, making photos of things they were happy to see on a walk, doing cartwheels on a beach, playing the wicked DJ set they spent three nights putting together, blowing bubbles, people watching and telling stories…. Because play is crucial. It is how we experience joy, keep well, make and pass on memories and history, and resist the manifold oppressions we experience because of our identities. Benewaa earned her Bachelor of Arts in Culture and Tourism at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumase, Ghana.
