Biography

Eli Lederhendler, the Stephen S. Wise Professor of American Jewish History and Institutions at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, is also the academic director of the Leonid Nevzlin Research Center for Russian and East European Jewry at the Hebrew University. He is co-editor of the annual series, Studies in Contemporary Jewry and the author of American Jewry: A New History (Cambridge: 2017), Jewish Immigrants and American Capitalism: From Caste to Class, 1880-1920 (Cambridge: 2009), and numerous other publications in modern European and American Jewish history. Currently, he is writing on the question of social class as a tool in American Jewish historiography. He is also part of a research team of collaborating scholars in Israel and Germany who are working on Jewish life in post-Communist Russia and Poland.
