Major and Minor

Entering freshmen are placed at the appropriate level by assessment of their high school records or other previous formal or informal acquisition of the language. Successful completion of Italian 2030 Intermediate Italian or placement above the 2000 level fulfills the language requirement for graduation.

Major

A major in Italian consists of nine courses beyond ITAL 2030 Intermediate Italian and introduces students to Italian literature, culture, and thought.

The courses required for the major are:

  • ITAL 3130: Advanced Conversation and Composition
  • ITAL 3250: Italian Language and Culture
  • Four courses in literature or related field on the 4000 or 6000 level. May include one course taught in English. Courses selected upon consultation with the Italian Undergraduate Advisor.
  • Three electives. May include internships and one course taught in English. Courses selected upon consultation with the Italian Undergraduate Advisor.

Minor

A minor in Italian consists of six courses above ITAL 2030 Intermediate Italian.

The courses required for the minor are:

  • ITAL 3130 Advanced Conversation and Composition
  • ITAL 3250 Italian Language and Culture
  • Four electives. May include internships and one course taught in English. Courses selected upon consultation with the Italian Undergraduate Advisor.

Study abroad

The junior year and semester abroad programs are integral to the major in Italian and are also encouraged for non-majors. The student can count courses taken abroad towards the major and minor only with prior approval by the Italian Undergraduate Advisor.

Transfer credit

If you are seeking transfer credit for Italian, contact Professor Syrimis at msyrimis@tulane.edu. Please present the following information: the name of the institution where you will be studying; the title and number of the course; the syllabus for the course including number of class hours; the title of the book and the parts covered. Please note that any Italian course taken at another institution that does not meet the criteria of Tulane’s Italian courses is not likely to be granted transfer credit specifically toward the Tulane language requirement, Italian major, or Italian minor, but it may be granted general Tulane elective credit that counts toward graduation.
