Ancient Israel and Archaeology
Professor Boehm teaches courses on ancient Israel and archaeology. His courses on the ancient world stress an interdisciplinary understanding of the roots of Judaism in the Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman periods, and the interactions between Jews and non-Jews that contributed to the efflorescence of Jewish culture in Judea and the growth of the Jewish Diaspora. His courses examine the rich body of literature and material culture from this period to reconstruct the Jewish experience in both Palestine and the Diaspora communities in Egypt, Asia Minor, and Rome. They also consider texts written by Jews as well as Greeks and Romans, representing both sides of this exchange, and archaeological evidence that sheds light on daily life in the period
