Summer Lyric Theatre to Hold Auditions for the 2026 Season

Summer Lyric Theatre at Tulane University will hold auditions at Dixon Hall, Tulane University, on Friday, January 30, and Saturday, January 31, for its 59th Season: Chicago (directed and choreographed by Jauné Buisson), La Cage aux Folles (directed and choreographed by Diane Lala), and A Little Night Music (directed by Ricky Graham).

AUDITIONS FOR ADULT PERFORMERS (age 17 & Up)

Dance Auditions

The 9:00 am adult dance audition is specifically for Chicago and La Cage aux Folles.

We are looking for trained dancers and experienced movers for both shows.

Cagelles must look good in drag, be able to dance in heels, tap well, and kick high and cartwheel for the Can-Can. (other acro a plus).

Please bring heels, tap shoes, and flats with you. Cagelles also need to be able to sing, so please schedule a vocal audition time as well.

Movement auditions for A Little Night Music will happen at callbacks.

Dance Registration & Location

To register for an adult dance audition, click the link below. Bring a headshot, your completed vocal audition form, and a completed costume chart (found at the link below). Please arrive at Dixon Hall 45 minutes before the call time to complete your registration. If you also attend the vocal audition, you only need to complete 1 audition form and costume chart, and you only need to bring 1 headshot.

Vocal Auditions

Please bring a headshot and sheet music in the proper key. Music should be in a book or a 3-ring binder. Cuts should be clearly marked. An accompanist will be provided.

Prepare two (2) contrasting songs, 16-32 bars. Songs should show vocal range and acting ability and should be in the style of shows in our season. You may be asked to sing only one song cut.

Please note that the following roles have been cast. All other roles are open.

  • Albin, Georges, Jean-Michel, Anne, Edouard Dindon, and Marie Dindon as required by the licensing company. (La Cage aux Folles)

SEASON INFORMATION (Rehearsal & Performance Dates)

  • Chicago: rehearsals begin May 27 (AEA begins June 1) and runs June 18–21.
  • La Cage aux Folles: rehearsals begin June 22 and runs July 9–12.
  • A Little Night Music: rehearsals begin July 13 and runs July 30 – August 2.

Reminder: Juneteenth and July 4th are rehearsal dates for Summer Lyric. Even though they are holidays, we cannot afford the rehearsal time when faced with mounting these shows in such a short period.

Character Breakdown

Chicago
  • ROXIE HART – Mezzo-Soprano (F3-B4)
    Reads and keeps up with murder trials in Chicago, and follows suit by murdering her lover, Fred Casely. She stops at nothing to render a media storm with one goal: to get away with it.
  • FRED CASELY – Ensemble/Part Flexible
    Roxie’s short lived lover. Murdered for trying to leave Roxie.
  • SERGEANT FOGARTY – Ensemble/Part Flexible
    Assigned to Roxie’s case. After asking the right questions, he manages to get Roxie to confess.
  • AMOS HART – Baritone (C3-F#4)
    Roxie’s faithful husband. Lies for her and tries to take the blame until he realizes that he has been two-timed by Roxie. Still in love with her, or misguided, he believes anything she says in her pursuit to get out of jail.
  • LIZ – Ensemble (A3-C#5)
    Prisoner at Cook County Jail. She is imprisoned after shooting two warning shots into her husband’s head.
  • ANNIE – Ensemble (A3-C#5)
    Prisoner at the Cook County Jail. Murders her lover after finding out he already has six wives.
  • JUNE – Ensemble (A3-C#5)
    Prisoner at Cook County Jail. After her husband accuses her of screwing the milk man, he mysteriously runs into her knife ten times.
  • HUNYAK – Non-Singing Role
    Hungarian Prisoner at Cook County Jail. The only English she speaks is the phrase, ‘Not Guilty.’ Which follows her to her grave.
  • MONA – Ensemble (A3-C#5)
    Prisoner at Cook County Jail. Murders her lover after he has a round of affairs with other women, and an occasional man.
  • MARTIN HARRISON – Ensemble/Part Flexible
    Ensemble member who doubles as the Master of Ceremonies at times.
  • MATRON 'MAMA' MORTON – Alto (F#3-Bb4)
    Leader of the prisoners of Cook County Jail. The total essence of corruption. Accepts bribes for favors.
  • BILLY FLYNN – Baritone (Bb2-G4)
    Established lawyer who hasn’t lost a woman’s case yet. Master of media manipulation.
  • MARY SUNSHINE – Soprano (Bb3-Bb5)
    Sob sister reporter from the Evening Star. Believes there is a little bit of good in everyone.
  • GO-TO-HELL-KITTY – Ensemble (A3-C#5)
    Steals the spotlight when she murders her husband along with three other women.
  • HARRY – Ensemble/Part Flexible
    Murdered by Go-To-Hell Kitty for sleeping around.
  • AARON – Ensemble/Part Flexible
    Court appointed lawyer for Hunyak. He tries to get her to confess.
  • JUDGE – Ensemble/Part Flexible
    Judge overseeing Roxie’s Trial.
  • COURT CLERK – Ensemble/Part Flexible
    Swears people in with their hand on the bible.
La Cage aux Folles
  • JACOB – 20-35, Tenor (Top Ab)
    Sometimes the butler, sometimes the maid. This is a role of great comic timing, personality and zest. Must move well in heels.
  • JACQUELINE – 40+, Alto
    Mature female friend of Georges and Albin; owns a chic restaurant; attractive, charming; VERY theatrical.
  • RENAUD – 40-60, Baritone
    Friend of Georges and Albin; owns a small seaside cafe; good mover and singer.
  • MME RENAUD – 40-60, Mezzo
    Wife of Renaud. Good mover and singer.
  • FRANCIS – 20-40
    Fussy male stage manager in Georges' club; good comic timing; strong actor/dancer.
  • TABARRO – 25-50
    A fisherman; also plays the Waiter in ‘The Best of Times’.
  • TOWNSPEOPLE – Various
    Patrons, fishermen, etc.
  • LES CAGELLES – 8 roles
    Fabulous showgirls at La Cage aux Folles. They are the most accomplished female impersonators in France. Must sing and dance – IN HEELS!
    • CHANTAL of Avignon
      Stunning soprano voice; MUST be able to sing falsetto! She’s a bit of a diva!
    • HANNA from Hamburg
      A leather-wearing dominatrix; brandishes a whip and an attitude!
    • PHAEDRA the Enigma
      Not the brightest Cagelle.
    • MERCEDES
      She thinks SHE should be the star; and lets everyone know it.
    • DERMAH
      Wistful and innocent.
    • CLO-CLO
      Exotic and mysterious.
    • MONIQUE
      A Cagelle.
    • ANGELIQUE
      A Cagelle.
A Little Night Music
  • FREDRIKA ARMFELDT – 12-15, Soprano (C4-Eb5)
    Desiree's witty daughter who is very self-contained and formal with precise diction.
  • MADAME ARMFELDT – 70-85, Alto (C3-F#4)
    Desiree's elderly mother; brutally honest and a veteran of discreet encounters.
  • HENRIK EGERMAN – 18-21, Tenor (G3-B4)
    Fredrick's gloomy son. He is serious but confused, as he studies for the Lutheran priesthood.
  • ANNE EGERMAN – 18-21, Soprano (G#3-Ab5)
    Giddy and virginal; naive at times. A breathtakingly gorgeous child bride and Fredrick's new wife.
  • FREDRICK EGERMAN – 35-45, Baritone (A2-E4)
    Middle-aged lawyer who is married to his second wife, Anne, and has a son, Henrik, from his first marriage.
  • PETRA – 20-30, Mezzo-Soprano (F#3-F5)
    Anne's earthy maid and closest confidante. She seizes every moment to rustle in the hay.
  • COUNT CARL-MAGNUS MALCOLM – 30-45, Baritone (G3-F#4)
    Vain, arrogant, and splendidly proportioned but ferociously jealous. He is Desiree's newest lover.
  • COUNTESS CHARLOTTE MALCOLM – 30-40, Mezzo-Soprano (G3-F5)
    The Count's manic depressive, mistreated and downtrodden wife.
