French Undergraduate Awards:
Merit Awards
The Jonathan E. Lorino Memorial Award is the most prestigious prize awarded in the Department. It is given to the one French major who best shares the exceptional talent, strong work ethic, and generosity of spirit that Jonathan Lorino embodied.
The Oscar Maas Prize recognizes the best essay written in French during the academic year.
The Louis Bush Medal, founded in 1882, is awarded to a student who demonstrates excellence in the French and passion for French language and culture.
The Alcée Fortier Memorial Prize, established in 1923 and named after one of Tulane’s most illustrious professors of French, is awarded to a student with an exceptional command of the language.
The French Government Prize is a book prize that honors students who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the study of French.
The Henry Award is awarded to the sophomore student in French who not only has achieved high academic merit in French, but also shows a special enthusiasm for the language.
Travel Awards
The Professor Beth Poe Travel Fund in French Immersion Studies is a need-blind competitive grant open to declared French majors who have studied at least one year at Tulane at the time of the awarding of the grant. The award is to be used to fund a short summer study-abroad program. Applications include a proposal, which should articulate the purpose of the trip and the intended itinerary. Although a detailed budget is not required, applicants need to explain how they believe that they can carry out their plan with the funds made available to them by the award.
External Awards & Opportunities
CODOFIL Awards: CODOFIL is the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana. Its mission as Louisiana’s French agency is to support and grow Louisiana’s francophone communities through scholarships, French immersion and various other community and language skill-building programs. Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF): TAPIF offers you the opportunity to work in France for 7 months, teaching English to French students in public schools across all regions of metropolitan France and in the overseas départements of Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion.
