TGHC Working Groups

Working Groups are designed to allow scholars across disciplines to grapple with emerging areas, difficult questions, or challenging problems to which humanities scholarship may bring new insights. TGHC aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration within the humanities and humanistic social sciences and beyond — including the natural and applied sciences, medicine, public health, architecture, and the fine and performing arts. We invite proposals for working groups that engage broad themes, challenging questions, and/or wicked problems. Working groups provide a space for faculty and graduate students to find research partners across disciplines and develop collaborative projects.

Each working group will coalesce around a proposed theme and include two faculty conveners, who must be based in different departments. Membership must include at least 5 additional faculty, who commit to be involved for at least one year (funding is annual and may be renewed). PhD students are welcome to participate in working groups, with the permission of the co-conveners. The format of each working group will be determined by the group. Formats might include readings, invited guest speakers, or presentations of works-in-progress with members of the group. We are open to supporting any format that suits your collective intellectual interests. At the end of the academic year, the working group will either make a presentation at a TGHC event or release a working paper for publication on the TGHC website. Topics may engage with the biennial theme (currently Global Port Cities) but are not limited to this area.

TGHC will provide a maximum of $3,000 per year to support each working group. Funds can be spent on materials, books, speakers, food, and other purchases that support the working group's goals. Proposals should include a provisional budget. With approval, working groups can renew funding for a second year. Rolling applications will be accepted with a deadline of December 1 for groups starting in the spring, and April 1 for groups starting in the fall.

To apply, please complete this form on the TGHC website. It includes:

  • Contact information and CV (1-2 pages) for each co-convener along with a list of confirmed group participants and their CVs and Tulane affiliation
  • A brief description (500 words maximum) of the Working Group’s intellectual project, plus provisional starting bibliography (5-7 titles). This description may include, but is not limited to, the research questions that the group aims to address, the significance of the topic in relation to the group’s proposed contribution, and disciplinary approaches and methodologies the group members will bring to advance the research through collaborative discussions and exchange.
  • In addition to describing the WG topic, please include brief discussions of the group’s likely format (e.g. reading group meetings, speaker visits, etc.). We recognize that the format may evolve from this initial proposal.
  • Preliminary budget: note that you are not required to ask for the maximum $3000 if that is not necessary.
