Spring 2019 Schedule of Classes and Course Descriptions

Welcome to the website of the English Department at Tulane University. Here you will find information about our courses and programming offered through the department, professional biographies of our faculty, and descriptions of our undergraduate and graduate curricula. In addition to finding news about our current projects, you will be able to browse through some of our archived events and activities.

Our department has one of the strongest majors at the university, with many opportunities for small classes and close contact with our award-winning faculty. Majors can choose among several concentrations, including creative writing, global literature, and community service, and students can minor in English in conjunction with another major.

We offer a “4+1” M.A. program for our undergraduates with reduced tuition in their fifth year that includes a Certificate in Documentary Literary Studies. Our external M.A. program also draws students from around the country.

Undergraduates and graduate students alike participate in a vibrant intellectual community, with activities ranging from

  • special lectures by eminent scholars
  • readings by internationally-renowned writers
  • editing the literary magazine The Tulane Review
  • joining our nationally-recognized chapter of the English honor society Sigma Tau Delta
  • community engagement with our award-winning English Department Debate Education Society
  • career- and community-oriented internships
  • mentoring for employment and further education

Look for our departmental newsletter NOTED which we have archived here on the website. If you are an alumnus or alumna, we want to know where you are and what you have gone on to do with your lives and careers: contact us at Please let us know if you are planning a visit to the campus.

With warm regards,
