The Major The Minor Creative Writing Concentration Internships Courses Undergraduate Awards in English
A Note from the Director of Undergraduate Studies
Welcome to the English Department; and thank you for your interest in the undergraduate program in English!
The B.A. in English introduces students to a rich array of core and elective courses in British, American, and Global literatures. It prepares students to closely read literary and cultural texts in relation to a wide range of cultural, historical, philosophical and social contexts. It supports the production of comparative and interdisciplinary research and writing; and it builds knowledge of the application of English to other disciplines within the humanities; to the social sciences; and to technological innovation.
The department’s award-winning faculty teach courses in creative writing, expository writing, film, television, news media, environmental studies, archival research, cultural studies, gender and sexuality studies, and postcolonial studies. Course offerings reflect the range of faculty expertise in such areas as graphic fiction, hip hop studies, standup comedy, and literary theory. They cultivate a sense of imagination and empathy.
English majors have been the recipients of the Tulane 34 Awards, Center for Public Service Awards, and Newcomb Institute Grants. Alumni have pursued careers in higher education, entertainment, law, medicine, journalism, technology, and elective office. There simply are no limits to what you can achieve with a B.A. in English.
