4+1 M.A. Program External M.A. Program Courses
Application Deadlines
In Spring 2024, the English Department will be accepting applications to its two M.A. Programs for the 2024-2025 academic year.
The deadline for applications to the external M.A. program for the 2024-2025 academic year is March 1, 2024. Application forms are available on the School of Liberal Arts website. Review of applications to the 4+1 M.A. Program will begin April 15, 2024 and conclude June 1, 2024. Application forms are available at https://applygrad.tulane.edu/apply Applications must be made ONLINE only.

General Information
At this time, the Department of English at Tulane offers opportunities for graduate work towards the terminal Master of Arts. Tulane Undergraduate English majors may apply to the 4+1 M.A. Program. Students with the Bachelor of Arts in English or Literary Studies from Tulane or other institutions may apply to the external M.A. program. Transfer credit is available for students entering with graduate work done at other institutions.
The programs admit a small number of students, and our average class size is eight, with a one-to-one faculty ratio. Faculty specialties include literary theory, modernism, American literature, nineteenth-century British and American literature, early British literature, and world literature. Please review the faculty biographical pages for more information about specializations and research interests. The Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) advises all graduate students.
The M.A. programs offer coursework for students who have diverse plans for their futures. We have designed these programs carefully to provide students with the tools they need to understand the professions of literary scholarship and teaching. Each student receives coursework, mentoring, and/or practical experience in

- Research Methods
- Literary Fields and Concentrations
- Interdisciplinary Approaches
- Scholarly Presentation and Publication
- Applying to doctoral programs, other further study, or for employment
After completing the M.A. degree, some students continue graduate study in a doctoral program at another institution. Others pursue further education and/or employment in museum studies, library science, teaching, archival studies, journalism, or publishing.
Tuition
Students admitted to the 4+1 program pay regular undergraduate tuition during their senior year, and then pay a reduced tuition in the “+1” year, typically about one-third the cost of the undergraduate tuition, plus fees. Undergraduate scholarships do not transfer to the “+1” year.
Students admitted to the external M.A. program pay approximately one-third the cost of undergraduate tuition, plus fees. No stipends or assistantships are available. Students are encouraged to check with the University’s Financial Aid office for information about aid and loans. The department does not arrange for financing.
