Biography

Ladee Hubbard is the author of the novel The Talented Ribkins, which received a 2017 Hurston-Wright Legacy Award and the 2018 Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence. Her second novel, The Rib King, was named one of Time magazine's 100 Must-Read Books of 2021 and was a finalist for a Hurston-Wright Legacy Award. In 2022 she published The Last Suspicious Holdout, a collection of short stories which was long listed for the Aspen Words Literary Prize. In addition, she has also published short fiction and nonfiction in numerous venues including The New York Times, The Times Literary Supplement, Oxford American, Virginia Quarterly Review and Guernica.

Ladee Hubbard is a recipient of a Guggenheim Award, The Berlin Prize and a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers Award as well as fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center, the American Library in Paris and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies, among other organizations. She earned a BA in English from Princeton University, a MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a PhD in Folklore and Mythology from the University of California, Los Angeles.
