Biography

Professor Richard’s area of expertise is creative writing, particularly poetry. His poetry collections include Habitations (Portals Press, 2000), Motion Studies (The Word Works, 2011), Butcher’s Sugar (Sibling Rivalry Press, 2012), Parasite Kingdom (The Word Works, 2019), and Turned Earth (LSU Press, 2025). He has also published several chapbooks, most recently In Place (Seven Kitchens Press, 2022), winner of the Robin Becker Chapbook Series award. Other honors for his work include the Washington Prize; The Tenth Gate Award; the Poets & Writers, Inc., Writers Exchange Award; and the Louisiana Artist of the Year Award. His work has also received nominations for the Pushcart and Best of the Net prizes, and Motion Studies was a finalist for the Thom Gunn Award for Gay Male Poetry.

Brad Richard served for six years on the board of the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival and has been involved with other festivals and reading series in New Orleans. A Louisiana Master Gardener, he has a strong interest in native flora and fauna, environmentalism, eco-poetics, and the relationships between climate change and social justice.

In addition to Creative Writing, Richard has taught Introduction to Poetry and Introduction to American Literature, among other courses in the English department. He is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor for 2024-2025.
