The Department of History and the School of Liberal Arts award prizes to History students for academic and scholarly excellence. Each year we award Departmental Prizes for overall excellence. In addition, the Department celebrates undergraduate writing and research with several paper prizes detailed below.
The Sidney Beyer Prize for Excellence in American History
Awarded annually for the best undergraduate paper in U.S. History. Nominated papers may be either a seminar paper or a chapter from an Honors thesis.
The Charles Till Davis Prize for Excellence in European History
Awarded annually for the best undergraduate paper in European history. Nominated papers may be either a seminar paper or a chapter from an Honors thesis.
The Tulane Global Pathways Prize
Awarded annually for the best undergraduate paper in Latin American, Middle Eastern, African, or Asian history. Nominated papers may be either a seminar paper or a chapter from an Honors thesis.
The Aline Mackenzie Taylor Award in Intellectual History
For best essay in intellectual history. Nominated papers may be either a seminar paper or a chapter from an Honors thesis.
The Tulane Legal History Prize
Awarded annually for the best undergraduate paper in legal history.
The Tulane Emerging Scholar Prize
Awarded annually for the best history paper written by a first-year student.
The Tulane Award in Women and Gender History
Awarded annually for the best undergraduate paper in women’s or gender history.
The Tulane Public-Facing History Prize
Awarded annually for the most innovative public-facing history project. The projects might include digital history, an exhibit, an oral history project, or other projects intended to engage the public with history.
The Mary B. Scott Memorial Prize in the Social Sciences
For best essay showing original research written by a senior.
