Chris Willoughby, who is completing his dissertation on race and medicine in antebellum American culture is featured in Slate.com's "Slate Academy: The History of American Slavery" podcasts.
The online course features scholars like Ira Berlin, Annette Gordon-Reed, Marcus Rediker, Ed Baptist, Heather Williams, Eric Foner and more. Willoughby's appears alongside Deirdre Cooper Owens in Episode 7 ("To Do No Harm?), which explores "what modern medicine gained from slavery, and how slaveholders sought to legitimize their ideology through science." Listening to the full podcast requires enrolling in the Slate Academy as a Slate Plus member, but you can try it free for two weeks.
History Graduate Students Present Research in Brazil
Beau Gaitors and Christopher Willoughby, Ph.D. students in Latin American and U.S. history, respectively, co-presented a paper entitled "An Epidemic of Trade: Disease and Commerce in Post-Independence Veracruz" at the international conference "Tropical Disease in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Historical Perspective" held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (July 1-3, 2015).
Race and Place in Central America
Studying the history of a region without the inclusion of race may leave unanswered questions about its political and social evolution. To address what he considered a less-than-holistic view of Central America, Justin Wolfe, Tulane associate professor of history, has spent much of his career studying the dynamics of race in 19th-century Nicaragua.
