German Studies Major
Current German Studies Major requirements and German courses are listed in the University catalog.
All major programs in German are designed individually by the student in consultation with the designated departmental advisor. The major in German consists of at least 30 credits or ten courses beyond GERM 2030 Intermediate German. These courses are organized into two groups: I. foundational courses (four courses, 12 credits) and II. advanced courses (six courses, 18 credits), as outlined below.
Group I. Foundational Courses (four courses, 12 credits) Required:
- GERM 3050 Grammar and Composition (3)
3 courses chosen from the following:
- GERM 3160 Readings in German Literature (3)
- GERM 3250 German Language and Culture I (3)
- GERM 3260 German Language and Culture II (3)
- GERM 3270 German Language and Culture III (3)
Group II. Advanced Courses (six courses, 18 credits)
Three advanced courses, one 4000/6000-level course, one Advanced Undergraduate Seminar and one Senior Seminar (which fulfills the Capstone requirement). The three advanced courses may include up to two courses taught in English at the 3000 level (providing there is a significant reading and writing requirement in German) and/or up to two electives at the advanced level in a related field outside the department, e.g., courses in German art, history, music, philosophy, and politics.
Required:
- GERM 4800 Advanced Undergraduate Seminar (3)
- GERM 6800 Senior Seminar (3) [*This course fulfills the Capstone requirement]
- One other 4000-level or 6000-level course (3)
The other three courses may include:
- up to two GERM 3000-level courses taught in English (providing there is a significant reading and writing requirement in German)
- up to two elective at the advanced level in a related field outside the department, e.g. courses in German art, history, music, philosophy, and politics.
- Any other 4000-level or 6000-level course

German Studies Minor
Current German Studies Minor requirements and German courses are listed in the University catalog.
Five courses above GERM 2030 (=15 credits)
Two of these five courses are required:
- GERM 3050 Grammar and Composition and
- One 4000-level course
The remaining three courses may be selected from advanced language, literature, or culture courses in consultation with the designated departmental advisor. One course taught in the department in English at the 3000 level is allowed (providing there is a significant reading and writing requirement in German).
STUDY ABROAD GUIDELINES
For all major and minors, the department strongly recommends at least one semester of study abroad in Germany. Prior to participation, majors and minors are encouraged to complete at least GERM 3050, although the ideal study abroad candidate will have taken three courses at the 3000 level. Grades and credits will transfer for Tulane affiliated programs. Other exchange programs may receive credit upon departmental review.
For German majors who study abroad:
The 6000 level course must be taken on campus. Students returning from JYA or JSA may only take 4000-6000 level courses.
For German minors who study abroad:
6 credits (2 classes) must be taken on campus in the department. Students returning from JYA or JSA may only take 4000-6000 level courses.
