What happens when students get the chance to take their research further? They discover new places, new questions and new possibilities. From international literary research in Azerbaijan and England to hands-on language documentation and revitalization work with the Washoe community, SLA students are turning classroom learning into meaningful research experiences.

“I was so surprised by how technical linguistic fieldwork could be,” Diep shared. “At Tulane University, I learned all the linguistic theories and methods on how to work with the language data, but I did not know how the data got into the scholars’ hands in the first place. Now I know, and I must say it was A LOT of work!”
Emma Schubert (SLA ’27)
Political Science and Philosophy Major
“In our first week in Baku, we attended the international scientific conference, ‘Translating Empires: Representing People, Places and Power in and Around the Caucasus,’" said Schubert. "Standing at the same podium as experts in their respective fields gave me a taste of what it would be like to devote my career to academia and research.”
