Message from the Dean
As the dean of the School of Liberal Arts (SLA), I am pleased to welcome you to the web pages of our school. As will be clear as you navigate through the many links, the school is notable for its complexity and diversity. With 16 departments, 19 interdisciplinary programs, and offering 47 majors, 31 minors, 13 PhD, 14 MA, 5 MFA and 11 4+1 MA programs across the arts, humanities, and social science, SLA not only teaches more than 2500 majors and graduate students, but engages all Tulane students through our core courses, writing, and service learning classes.
Yet, while our numerous faculty and students speak in many voices and across a broad range of disciplines, they share a dedication to the liberal arts as a means of inspiration, creativity, engagement, and understanding. They recognize a distinctive SLA vision that acknowledges the tremendous richness of our region, transcends disciplinary boundaries, and draws strength from integrating learning with meaningful service. They believe in the power of research to challenge and inform and are committed to the importance of close classroom interactions that serve to engage and inspire.
These core beliefs, in fact, create a close network within Tulane University that includes not only our faculty and students, but our parents, alumni, friends and staff. Together, they work to further the mission of the school and the experience of all those who enter our classrooms, undertake our research endeavors, or engage in our unique relationship with the community.
Thus, whether you are a perspective student, parent, or faculty member, or a long-standing member of the school, we invite you to explore the website, visit us on campus, or send us your thoughts and suggestions. We are certainly delighted you have chosen to become part of the remarkable community that is SLA.
