Conference and Symposium Funding Award Application

The School of Liberal Arts Dean’s Office and the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South have initiated a new funding process to support Liberal Arts full-time, regular faculty organizing symposia and conferences in their disciplines. Up to $10,000 may be awarded per symposium or conference event occurring in a given year, per applicant, as funding permits.

Funding will be prioritized for symposia and conferences hosted at Tulane or in New Orleans or the Gulf South region. Symposia or conferences outside the region organized by SLA faculty also will be considered, with justification (e.g., to support the work of the SLA scholar and their service or leadership in a national organization).

Funds can support expenses such as honoraria for keynotes and/or speakers, travel, lodging, meals, receptions, marketing, promotion, video support/recording or other technical support, and other reasonable requests.

The conditions of the funding support include the following: 1) the School of Liberal Arts must be listed as a sponsor or co-sponsor, as well as the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South, when relevant; 2) for conferences or symposia on the Tulane campus (and in New Orleans, when possible), any registration or attendance fees would need to be waived for Tulane faculty and students, as well as SLA staff officers or unit administrators or their designates; and 3) following the conference or symposium, the funding applicant would be expected to submit a brief report with supporting documentation.

Deadlines – Applications will be accepted as follows, as funding permits:

  • October 1
  • March 1

Application Process:

Applications will be evaluated by the Executive Committee, and the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South when relevant.

Also provide one PDF document to include the following:

  1. A complete proposal (around 3 pages) detailing:
    • Conference/symposium title, description, and purpose; include the event schedule (as available), date and time, and venue/location(s). Clearly note the event’s significance and how it will impact or contribute to the understanding of scholarship, education, culture, environment, or other reflections.
    • If any funding will be requested to support a speaker/ participant’s involvement (including the applicant, if a symposia or conference outside the Gulf South region will support the work of the SLA scholar and their service or leadership in a national organization), provide the participant's name and institution or other affiliation and (briefly) his or her qualifications, as well as the role in the conference/symposium. (If more than one speaker/ participant is planned, then this must be explained, and documentation/ information must be provided for each speaker.)
    • As applicable, provide title and description of any presentation/address to given by a speaker(s)/participant who will be supported by the requested funds; specify the date, time, and location of a speaker’s address and any other activities in which the speaker is participating in the conference/ symposium.
    • If not previously addressed, a tentative itinerary noting the overall date range and activities of the speaker/participant’s visit, to provide a full picture of the visit. (For example, if funds are requested to support 3 nights’ stay and the speaker/participant is only involved in conference/symposium activities on the 1st and 2nd days, the committee will want to understand why funding a 3rd night’s stay is requested.)
    • A clear, itemized budget and total of requested funds, relevant to the expenses for which applicant is requesting a Conference and Symposium Funding Award. Also reflect other funding sources to which you have applied, along with amounts requested or awarded and the purpose of those funds. Conference and Symposium Funding Awards can range up to $10,000. Additional support for increased honorarium or speaker’s fees and other items should be sought from other sources.
  2. Relevant documentation pertaining to the SLA faculty member’s role in organizing or hosting all or part of the conference/symposium (e.g., letter of invitation, online confirmation reflecting the name and role of hosting faculty member(s), etc.), as well as any activities/schedule in which the faculty member will be directly involved in the conference/symposium, if not already addressed in point # 1.
  3. C.V. of the faculty applicant, ensuring it reflects conference and other activities and any funding support received from internal and external sources at least during the applicant’s employment at Tulane.
  4. Short c.v. or thorough biography/description of any other speaker/ participant's qualifications, if the requested Conference and Symposium Funding Award will support their activities.
