Biography

Barbara Hayley has been a member of the Newcomb Dance Program, Department of Theatre and Dance faculty since 1985. She teaches ballet and modern dance, choreography, and community engagement classes.  In New York, Ms. Hayley taught dance at Wagner College, performed with numerous choreographers, and directed Barbara Hayley & Dancers. In New Orleans, Hayley directs New Orleans Dance, now a project-based company comprised of local professional artists, teachers, and choreographers. Since 2009 she teaches Building Community through the Arts (BCA) with Professor Ron Bechet (The Xavier University of New Orleans) for Tulane and Xavier students consideration of equity/inequity via case studies and applied work, most recently, with the Orleans Legacy Project in cooperation with the Equal Justice Initiative (eji.org/) in Montgomery, Alabama. Hayley is a Fulbright Senior Scholar and with New Orleans Dance has received grants and awards for both original choreography and modern dance production, including the 1999 Mayor's Arts Award and the 2019 New Orleans Arts Council Lifetime Achievement Award.  MFA, New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
