Biography

Michaela Cannon (she/her) grew up in southern California, by the Pacific, and carries the early lessons and inspiration from the waves and tides into her life and work. She received her BA in English from UC Santa Barbara, her MFA in Modern Dance from the University of Utah, and her yoga teaching certificate under the tutelage of Swan Michelle Baker. As a lifelong student, Michaela has worked with dancers, choreographers, yogis, healers, shamans, scholars, and curanderos around the world. She began teaching at Tulane in 2006, and she currently teaches courses in modern/contemporary dance technique, the history of ballet and modern dance, composition, and yoga. Michaela’s interest in healing, wellness, and wholeness is the underlying force behind her dancing, teaching, and choreography. Her research focuses on creativity, presence, freedom, and exploring expanded states of consciousness to discover the truth of who we are. She wants to separate the dirt and pull at the roots, and to work to remember that we can change the currents because we are the currents.
