Tulane University’s interdisciplinary doctoral program, City, Culture and Community (CCC), held its third annual student-organized symposium, Social Justice and the City: Implications for Race and Equity, on March 10th-11th, 2016. The program, currently in its fifth year, is an innovative partnership between the Department of Sociology, Urban Studies, and the School of Social Work.
Graduate students welcomed keynote speaker, Dr. Mary Pattillo, Harold Washington Professor of Sociology and African American Studies at Northwestern University and a Faculty Affiliate at the Institute for Policy Research. Dr. Pattillo kicked off the symposium with her presentation entitled “School Choice?” on the perceptions of choice within the African American communities of Chicago. Over 140 attendees included faculty, undergraduate and graduate students from many disciplines at Tulane as well as members of the wider community.
On Friday, March 11th, graduate students from sociology, social work, urban studies, public health, policy and education presented their research in a series of panels. Panel topics ranged from Disaster and Reconstruction to Equity and Education. Graduate students from other schools, including the University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, University of Texas and New York University also traveled to New Orleans to contribute to the conversation with their own presentations.
Interdisciplinary education continues to be a focus of Tulane through President Fitts. The City, Culture and Community symposium provides an important space for graduate students from many disciplines to share their research on relevant social topics.
