The Department of Theatre and Dance proudly presents the poignant and sometimes funny drama, Eclipsed by Patricia Burke Brogan. This play is an exciting selection for the department in keeping with its Jubilee commitment to present works by and representing historically marginalized groups and genders. This production will represent women from its all-female cast and authorship through its direction by Tulane University Assistant Professor Monica Payne, MFA. Payne’s background as founder of Theatre Lumina – a company devoted to cross-cultural collaborations and international exchange – make her a wonderful fit for this Irish play. Payne approaches the story with thoughtful sensitivity and first-hand knowledge of Europe.

Set in 1963, Eclipsed captures a unique time in history when conservative ideals are on the cusp of falling away as a new generation defines its morals and values – trapped between the old and the new are the women and babies in the story. Based on the real-life hardships and tragedies of Magdalene laundries run by the Roman Catholic Church to correct the behaviors of “fallen women”, Eclipsed, tells a story of suffering as ideals and meet reality. Appropriately, our society finds itself in a similar place today as legislation affecting reproductive rights and childcare are priority news stories today. This parity makes lessons and questions offered up in the play important ideas to reflect upon for modern audiences. Sure to strike a chord, this play is a great selection to close our fall 2021 theatre season as its lessons will leave all audience members with something to be grateful for as we depart campus for the holiday break.

Eclipsed will run Friday, December 10th – Tuesday, December 14th in the Lupin Theatre located in the Dixon Performing Arts Center Annex on Tulane University campus. Performances will be at 7:30 pm with an additional matinee performance on Saturday, December 11th at 2 pm. There will be a talkback following the performance on Monday, December 13th with the designers for the show and the director. Audience members attending the talkback can expect a robust conversation – please allow 30 - 40 minutes for discussion. Tickets for this performance will go on sale on Monday, November 15th, 2021. Student tickets (those under 18 and those with university IDs) will be $14/per person and Patron tickets (18+ without a student ID) will be $21/per person.
