Professor Morgan Palmer presented a paper entitled “Time and Eternity on Inscriptions Commemorating the Vestal Virgins” at the April 2018 meeting of the Classical Association at the University of Leicester in England. The paper, which was part of a panel on “Women in Roman Religion,” explores the ways in which inscriptions commemorating the Vestal Virgins, ancient Roman priestesses, reflect the ways in which their lives were shaped by the strictures of time and by the expectations of continuing service. Students in Professor Palmer’s “Roman Religion” class at Tulane have been discussing women in Roman Religion, and have explored literary, epigraphic, and archaeological evidence for the Vestal Virgins.
