PAUL A. CARTLEDGE, professor of Greek History at the University of Cambridge, Clare College, is the world's leading authority on ancient Sparta. He is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. He has written and edited sixteen books on the ancient Greek world, most recently The Spartans: An Epic History and The Cambridge Illustrated History of Ancient Greece, served as chief historical consultant for the BBC television series The Greeks, and is co-editor of the Cambridge University Press monograph series Key Themes in Ancient History. He is recipient of the Gold Cross of the Order of Honor, conferred by the president of Greece in 2002.
