JACOB A. HOWLAND, the McFarlin Professor of Philosophy at the The University of Tulsa, is a specialist in the fields of ancient Greek philosophy and political philosophy and an authority on Plato. He is the author of The Republic: The Odyssey of Philosophy (1993, 2004), The Paradox of Political Philosophy: Socrates’ Philosophic Trial (1998), and articles on Plato and Aristotle. His newest book, Kierkegaard and Socrates: A Study in Philosophy and Faith, will appear this spring from Cambridge
