HEINRICH VON STADEN, now emeritus, served as professor of Classics and History of Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton from 1998-2010, after many years as a professor at Yale University. Prof. von Staden has published in many fields, most notably on ancient science and medicine, fields that he has helped to transform. His book Herophilus: the Art of Medicine in Early Alexandria (1989) is a major contribution to the history of Greek intellectual discourse. He has won numerous awards, and he has been appointed a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Corresponding Fellow of both the British Academy and the Akademie der Wissenschaften, Göttingen, and a Member of the American Philosophical Society.
