The Tulane Department of Classical Studies presents the Dennis A Georges Lecture in Hellenic Culture
Theater of War
Outside the Wire
Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 7PM in the Dixon Hall
Theater of War is an innovative public health project that presents readings of ancient Greek plays, Sophocles' Ajax and Philoctetes, as a catalyst for town hall discussions about the challenges faced by service members, veterans, their families, caregivers and communities. Using Sophocles' plays to forge a common vocabulary for openly discussing the visible and invisible wounds of war on individuals, families and communities, these events are aimed at fostering understanding and compassion, while mobilizing citizens and resources to help improve the lives of service members, veterans, their families, and people in their communities. The presentation is approximately 2 hours long. The reading from the play will be followed by a discussion with panelists from the community, and a facilitated town-hall style audience discussion. Featuring Bryce Pinkham and Emily Young. Facilitated, Translated and Directed by Bryan Doerries. Produced by Phyllis Kaufman. About Outside the Wire Outside the Wire is a social impact company that uses theater and a variety of other media to address pressing public health and social issues, such as combat-related psychological injury, end of life care, prison reform, political violence and torture, and the de-stigmatization of the treatment of substance abuse and addiction.
