Dr. Emily Greenwood is Professor of Classics and African American Studies at Yale University. Her research interests include ancient Greek historiography, twentieth century uses of Classics (especially in Africa, Britain, the Caribbean, and Greece), Classics and Postcolonialism, and the theory and practice of translating the ‘classics’ of Greek and Roman literature. She has written books on Thucydides and the Shaping of History (Cambridge 2007) and Afro-Greeks: Dialogues Between Anglophone Caribbean Literature and Classics in the Twentieth Century (Oxford 2011), which won the Runciman Prize.
In her lecture she will examine Aristotle's discussion of slavery in Politics Book 1, and put forward an argument about the way in which grammar promotes ideology, with lessons for how philology (particularly the kind of philology involved in the study of ancient Greek) is at the heart of many contemporary political debates in America. The public is warmly invited to attend.
