The lecture presents the results of recent excavations at Azoria, an early Archaic city in eastern Crete, tracing the development of the settlement from its foundations in the seventh century B.C. until its destruction in the early 5th century B.C. The emphasis will be the archaeological evidence for the mobilization of agricultural produce as a critical component of the political economy of the early city, and patterns of food storage, processing, and distribution in ritualized contexts of communal consumption.
