This course will trace the evolution of the practice of medicine in Ancient Greece and Rome. Students will have the opportunity to read a multitude of ancient sources, many of which are some of the first written texts that describe the human body, its functions, and the ways in which it can be healed. The broad range of topics which will be covered in this class range from theories of medicine in antiquity, to military medicine, and more. students will not only gain a knowledge of the foundation of medicine, but also better understand the practice of medicine as it exists today through experiences such as a trip to the Pharmacy Museum in the French Quarter.
