Greek Pottery CLAS-4180

Pottery fragment Greek procession, 570–550 a.C. From the temple of Demeter Malophoros in Sicily

When excavating in Greece, no matter what period, pottery is the single most recurring find. From lilies and spirals to Geometric designs to the iconic black and red figures, Greek pottery changes its style at an unusual fast pace, suggesting that in Greece pots were much more than containers for food and drinks. They carried a lot of implicit significance that defined the identity of their owners. In this seminar, we will study the way ancient Greek pottery can and has been used by archaeologists to uncover social behaviors. To fully appreciate the potential of pottery as a medium, we will consider a number of case studies, particularly from the late prehistoric period.
