A minor in economics consists of a minimum of five economics classes. Please note that the choice of five classes depends on the requirement of your major.
Students who must complete ECON 1010 and ECON 1020 to fulfill a requirement in their major: These students must take five additional economics courses to be eligible for a minor in economics, for a total of seven courses, i.e., ECON 1010 and 1020, plus any five economics courses of their choice. Of these seven, at least four must be taken at Tulane. Note that, if the student takes ECON 3010 or 3020, each must be passed with a grade of C- or better. Note also that Political Economy (PECN) 4300 and 4400 may be counted as economics electives.
Students whose majors do not specifically require ECON 1010 and 1020 to fulfill their major requirement: These students must take ECON 1010 and ECON 1020, plus any three other courses offered in the department -- except ECON 3010, ECON 3020, and ECON 3230. (The completion of ECON 3010 is strongly recommended even though it does not count toward the minor for these students.) Of these five, at least three must be taken at Tulane. As above, Political Economy (PECN) 4300 and 4400 may be counted as economics electives.
Students who must complete ECON 1010 OR ECON 1020 (but not both) to fulfill a requirement in their major: These students must take ECON 1010 and ECON 1020, plus any four other courses offered in the department. Of these six, at least four must be taken at Tulane. As above, Political Economy (PECN) 4300 and 4400 may be counted as economics electives.
Students with multiple minors: Please note the Economics Department adheres to the School of Liberal Arts policy, which states, "No courses counting toward the student's first minor will count toward the student's second minor."
*Department policy allows for major minor overlap of ECON 1010 only; no other classes are permitted.
*Note that Economics 3890, 4570, the 1-credit STATA classes, 4971, and 5000* do not count toward this requirement.
