A Day in the Life

Austin Vu, Tulane University

Three School of Liberal Arts students from the Dean’s Student Advisory Board take us through their personal journeys, where they balance their interdisciplinary interests, classes and clubs to create a full Tulane SLA experience. Here is a day in the life of Austin Vu.

Austin Vu at Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane

9 AM · At the Newcomb Museum

I am a peer mentor for Chara Kokkiou’s TIDES class: Love and Compassion in Action. This week we went to the Newcomb Art Museum, and students were asked to write about pieces that evoked feelings for them. I loved seeing the pottery pieces on display and learning what they were used for before they were preserved in the museum.

Cryostat machine in a Tulane research lab

12 PM · In the research lab

This is a cryostat machine in my research lab. It’s used to slice mice brains so we can stain them to see specific indicators/expressions. My lab, The Liz Lab, is studying B cells and their impact on resilience and susceptibility to stress.

Austin Vu and Professor Daniel Burnston meeting for a Tenenbaum Tutorials project, Tulane University

3 PM · Tenenbaum Tutorials

I have a weekly meeting with Professor Daniel Burnston for my Tenenbaum Tutorials project. I am currently doing research on how we can evaluate artificial consciousness through functionalist and other consciousness theories.

The Rat at Tulane University

5 PM · At the Rat

I stopped by my favorite hangout spot on campus, the Rat. It always has a super cozy vibe, and the consoles are always open to use. I also love coming here for movie and karaoke nights!
