Freie Universität Berlin Exchange Fellowship

The Freie Universität Berlin exchange fellowship is open to all School of Liberal Arts graduate students (MA, MFA, PhD) whose thesis or dissertation research would be enhanced by study at the German University. PhD students will be enrolled as visiting PhD students for research. Master’s students are enrolled as non-degree graduate students and approval from the appropriate department at Freie is required for enrollment in specific classes at Freie Universität Berlin.

Applications are reviewed by a selection committee in the Dean’s Office which nominates 2 applicants for admission to the Freie Universität Berlin Exchange program. Freie Universität Berlin sends official acceptance letters to the nominated students who have been accepted.

Applicants should submit the following materials in one consolidated PDF file e-mailed to Assistant Dean Ann Schumacher, aschumac@tulane.edu OR via hardcopy to the School of Liberal Arts, Dean’s Office, Newcomb Hall 116, attention Ann Schumacher:

  1. A letter of recommendation from advisor or department chair
  2. Transcripts of undergraduate and graduate work (official copy NOT necessary)
  3. A statement of plans for study abroad and how this exchange opportunity would benefit your research
  4. A brief evaluation of your proficiency in German (ie. reading knowledge, basic, intermediate, advanced, etc.). This can be a self assessment to include a listing of any German classes taken OR a formal evaluation from the German department

ALL application materials are due in SLA office no later than Monday, March 29, 2023. Applicants will be notified if they have been nominated as an exchange student by April 5. Freie will then contact nominees with information about completing the application and uploading necessary documents via their online application form.

There is no formal language proficiency requirement but a basic reading and speaking knowledge of German is strongly recommended. Candidates who are uncertain of their level of German may make an appointment with the German and Slavic Languages Department to have their German language proficiency evaluated (if possible prior to submitting the application). Freie Universität Berlin offers an intensive German language class before the beginning of the semester which is available to exchange students who have a minimal knowledge of German.
