Barry H. Shafer Scholarship Fund

Summer session, School of Criticism and Theory, Cornell University

The School of Liberal Arts (SLA) is pleased to offer the Barry H. Shafer Scholarships to support two advanced Ph.D. students to attend a summer session at Cornell University’s prestigious School of Criticism and Theory This intensive six-week course of study is held every summer (usually from mid-June to mid-July in Ithaca, New York).

“Founded in 1976, the School of Criticism and Theory brings together a diverse group of scholars from around the world, addressing an ever-expanding arrangement of cultural, political and social movements, theoretical axes and intersecting debates across the humanities and social sciences."

Eligibility and Support

The Barry H. Schafer Scholarship will provide funds to support up to two ABD Ph.D. candidates from SLA. Each student will receive $5,000 to support their participation in the 6-week program. Students can only receive this award once during their tenure at Tulane.

Application Requirements

Students must apply using the online form below. The application requires the following documents:

  • Current CV
  • A letter of intent describing how you would benefit from participating in the program and which of the seminars offered fit into your own research interests (max 500 words).
  • Brief letter from your dissertation chair or your program’s director of graduate studies, confirming your status as a Ph.D. Candidate (ABD) and your suitability for the program.

Deadline

The deadline to apply is Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Late applications will not be accepted. Selected students will be notified by January 23rd and provided with instructions on how to fill out the application on the SCT website.
