Support the Art Department

The Newcomb Art Department offers varied opportunities for alumni, families, and friends to support our mission and invest in the future of art education, research, programming, and exhibitions. Each academic year we host several special lectures, artist talks, exhibitions, and curatorial seminars, all free and open to the public, made possible by our benefactors. Gifts also support student and faculty research in both Art History and Studio Art. In addition our studios and classrooms consistently need support for the acquisition of tools and new technologies, essential to the production and presentation of art in the 21st century.

All gifts to Tulane's Newcomb Art Department are considered charitable donations. Contributions may be made directly to the Art Department. You may specify exactly which area you would like to support (Art History, Carroll Gallery, Ceramics, Digital Arts, Glass, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture).

A gift can also add to or establish an endowed fund that keeps the principal intact and uses only the income. The Newcomb Art Department has several endowed funds to which you can contribute, including:

  • The Emery C Smith Fellowship funds graduate students in art history.
  • The Wladis Lecture on Curatorial Careers sponsors lectures and seminars by the nation's top museum professionals.
  • The Sandra Garrard Memorial Fund supports lectures by internationally acclaimed artists and historians.
  • The Joann Flom Greenberg Fund supports visiting artists in glass and ceramics.
  • The Joyce Frank Menschel Art History Fund supports graduate students in art history and art history faculty research and initiatives.
  • The Sandy Chism Memorial Award in Painting is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate each year.
  • The Henry Stern Art Fund supports an award to an outstanding art history paper written by an undergraduate each year, as well as lectures in art history.

You can also chose to make a major gift to the Newcomb Art Department. Major gifts can include bequests made through a will; deferred gifts that provide life income for the donor or another person designated by the donor, and then benefit the Art Department; and outright gifts, such as cash or marketable securities.

We can also make a gift to create or support an endowed fund for a minimum of $20,000 in your name or the name of someone you wish to honor.

We can set up funds to:

  • purchase equipment such as computers (hardware and software), printers, scanners, and projectors for the department
  • purchase and maintain studio equipment (glass furnaces, printing presses, cameras, ceramic kilns)
  • establish a lecture series or professional development program
  • establish an award for outstanding undergraduate or graduate students
  • provide funds for undergraduate and graduate student stipends
  • fund undergraduate, graduate or faculty research
