Biography
Christian Stock, originally from Bristol, England, received a B.A. in Design from Staffordshire University and an M.F.A. in Glass from Tulane University, where he was the recipient of the Eleanor B. Kohlmeyer Award for Graduate Studies in Studio Art. He joins the faculty at Tulane as Senior Professor of Practice in Glass. He previously taught sculpture at Loyola University and glass casting at YAYA Arts Center in New Orleans.
His studio practice reflects his interest in structural forms and mechanical systems, especially architectural and organic frameworks, suspension bridges, medieval contraptions, and primitive supporting structures. His sculptures often combine glass with steel and concrete, today's three main building materials. Utilizing glass' strength under tension and compression, and playing with its apparent unsuitability has been an integral part of his transformation of ideas about structure and space into sculpture.
