Caecilia Davis-Weyer memorial service held December 1 Caecilia Davis-Weyer, Professor of Medieval Art History at the Newcomb Art Department from 1967-1996, died earlier this month in New Orleans. A native of Germany, Caecilia Davis-Weyer grew up in Hannover. She studied at the Universities of Hamburg, Paris, and Bonn, and received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Cologne in 1962. A devoted and dedicated teacher, Professor Davis received the Mortarboard Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1978. Her courses were demanding, but she was extremely generous with her time. She would, for example, assign foreign language articles to be read by her undergraduate students, and then spend hours in her office helping students translate them. As a scholar, Professor Davis was widely respected and admired in Europe and the United States. For many years she stood at the summit of her profession and academic specialty. Richard Krautheimer, the distinguished authority in the field of Early Christian art, considered her work, "the indispensable basis for study in the field." Charles L. Striker, a major Byzantinist, characterized her work as "brilliant and daunting" for its command of information and powers of handling "the image-text relationship of the early middle ages."
A memorial service was held on Monday, December 1 at the Rogers Memorial Chapel, followed by a reception at the Newcomb Faculty Lounge.

Anne Dunlop curates major exhibition of Old Masters The Newcomb Art Gallery staged its largest exhibition ever of Old Master art with the opening of “Early Modern Faces: European Portraits 1480-1780” on March 27 at Tulane University. The exhibition brought together nearly 90 Old Master paintings and prints by some of the most famous artists of Renaissance and Baroque Europe, including Van Dyck, Veronese, Zurbaran, Rembrandt and Goya. “It’s an enormous show,” said curator Anne Dunlop, an art history professor at Tulane. “It’s a real achievement to have this show here. And it’s a big chance for the people of New Orleans to see works that they wouldn’t necessarily get to see.” The rise of the portrait was one of the fundamental artistic developments of early-modern art, with the artist trying to record the subject’s appearance while documenting a social, historical or ideal persona. “Any historic house you go into, you’ll see portraits,” Dunlop said. “But we don’t necessarily think about the fact that they have a particular development and a particular style. This is a chance for people to see how portraits came into being and to think about what they are looking at. There is a kind of staged or performance aspect to these works.” Dunlop said the exhibition is one of the biggest displays of Old Master art to ever take place in New Orleans. Most of the works are on loan from the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Collection of Houston, with several from the New Orleans Museum of Art. The exhibition catalog includes entries written by Tulane students.
